As a member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), she works professionally as a translator specializing in Media, Sustainable Development, and Environmental contexts. Her research integrates Spanish language pedagogy with historical/social exploration of the Spanish-speaking world, focusing on migration narratives and digital educational resources to foster reflective learning.
Nelson's publications (2012-2018) reveal consistent innovation in language education through migration history documentation and digital tool development. These works demonstrate interdisciplinary connections between migration studies, digital humanities, and language acquisition, particularly highlighting Franco-era exile experiences as pedagogical resources for contextualized language learning.
Grant funding includes JISC support for the OpenLIVES project, which publishes open learning resources via The HumBox. While no PhD students are listed, her teaching coordination covers multiple undergraduate language stages. Collaborative projects like Salamanca Portfolio and XERTE for Spanish learning involve Professor Kate Borthwick and international researchers.
She actively participates in the Centre for Language Study, contributing to university-wide language education initiatives. Current work emphasizes digital resource creation (e.g., XERTE tools) and curricula integrating migration history with language competency development.
