Professor Kate Borthwick is a Professorial Enterprise Fellow at the University of Southampton, specializing in digitally-mediated teaching and learning within Modern Languages and Linguistics. She serves as Director of Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and chairs the University's Digital Education Advisory Group and Generative Artificial Intelligence working group.
- Research interests: Massive Open Online Courses, AI in education, inclusive design in digital education, open educational practices (OEP), and technology-mediated language teaching.
- Current projects focus on AI-enabled language education, MOOCs as communities of practice, and inclusive online course design.
Her recent publications (2019–2025) span digital education, MOOCs, and socio-technical frameworks in higher education. Selected as a keynote speaker globally (2013–2024), she advocates for open educational resources (OERs) and digital-first pedagogy.
- Awarded Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) in 2021, Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award (2018), and Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Internationalisation (2016).
- Supervises PhD students in Applied Linguistics, ELT, and Modern Languages.
She led the creation of OER repositories (LanguageBox, HumBox) and FutureLearn MOOCs, while contributing to editorial boards of ReCALL and Technology in Language Learning journals.
