Irina D. Manta

Irina D. Manta is Professor of Law and Founding Director of the Center for Intellectual Property Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law, Hofstra University. She has previously served on the faculties of Case Western Reserve University, University of Chicago, Fordham, Cardozo, Brooklyn, George Washington, and Arkansas law schools, and was a Bigelow Fellow at Chicago. She clerked for Judge Morris S. Arnold on the Eighth Circuit and earned her J.D. and B.A. from Yale University.

Her research focuses on intellectual property, torts, privacy, internet law, national security, immigration, and the intersection of law with psychology and economics. She explores how legal doctrines interact with human behavior and institutional design, particularly in digital and transnational contexts.

Her recent scholarship, published in top journals like NYU Law Review, Texas Law Review, and Vanderbilt Law Review, centers on citizenship, denaturalization, online deception, trademark law, and the criminalization of IP violations. Her articles reveal a consistent interest in the boundaries of legal protection, individual rights, and systemic fairness in evolving technological and political landscapes.

She has received the Lawrence A. Stessin Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Publications and has been a Visiting Scholar at Waseda University. She contributes to public discourse through op-eds in The Washington Post, Scientific American, and SCOTUSBlog, and co-hosts the podcast Strangers on the Internet.

Manta has taught courses in Torts, Property, Intellectual Property, Trademarks, Copyright, International IP, and Law & Social Science. She co-authored a textbook on criminal aspects of IP and advises on policy issues involving privacy, free speech, and digital rights. She has delivered over 100 talks worldwide and engages in interdisciplinary research linking law with empirical social science.

She is actively involved in academic and public discourse through her role at Hofstra’s Center for Intellectual Property Law and her collaborations with scholars such as Cassandra Burke Robertson, David S. Olson, and Gregory Dolin.
