Irina Borovkov is a Senior Lecturer in Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas (since 2003), affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. She holds a Ph.D. in Genetics from the USSR Academy of Sciences (1983), and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Plant and Animal Genetics and Cytology from Novosibirsk State University (1975, 1973).
Her research focuses on molecular genetics, plant disease resistance, and transgenic crop analysis. She has contributed to the molecular characterization of transgenic events in crops like soybean and corn, with expertise in DNA sequencing, genetic mapping, and marker development. Key projects include mapping rust resistance genes in barley and identifying molecular markers for disease resistance in plants.
Borovkov has held roles at Monsanto (1997–2003) as a Molecular Geneticist and Principal Investigator, leading regulatory compliance projects for genetically engineered crops, and at North Dakota State University (1991–1997) as a Research Associate, where she mapped resistance genes in barley and received a departmental award for scientific achievements. She also worked at Pfizer (2003) on oncology-related molecular studies.
Her skills encompass advanced molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, cloning, genotyping), bioinformatics tools (GCG, MapMaker), and regulatory science. She has authored over 20 publications and holds a strong record of project management and team collaboration in academic and industrial settings.
At UTD, she teaches courses in Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory (BIOL4380) and Classical and Molecular Biology (BIOL3301).
