Professor Song Ki-hwan is a faculty member at Sejong University in the Department of Life Sciences, Plant Biotechnology, and the Graduate School of Bioindustry and Resource Engineering since 2015. His research focuses on plant breeding and biotechnology, particularly in cucurbit crops such as cucumber and pumpkin.
- PhD in Plant Breeding from Seoul National University (1997)
- Former Senior Breeder at Dongbu Farm Hannong (2007–2014)
- Former Breeder at Monsanto Korea (2000–2007)
Research interests include disease resistance, stress tolerance (salt, drought, chilling), genome sequencing, molecular marker development, and micropropagation techniques. His lab investigates genetic diversity in cucurbit crops and develops breeding technologies through cell/tissue culture.
Recent publications highlight work on gene discovery for fruit traits (e.g., yellow endocarp, white skin color), stress response mechanisms, metabolomic profiling, and genome-wide association studies in cucurbit crops. Patents focus on molecular markers for bitterness-free cucumbers and stress-resistant varieties.
