Irene Petrosillo is an Associate Professor of Ecology at the University of Salento, where she also holds national qualification as a Full Professor in the same discipline. She is affiliated with the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies, located at the Ecotekne Center in Lecce, Italy. Her research and teaching focus on critical environmental issues including ecosystem services, sustainability, and landscape ecology.
Dr. Petrosillo earned her Degree in Biological Sciences with a focus on Ecology from the University of Lecce in 2000, followed by a PhD in Basic Ecology from the same institution in 2005. She progressed from Research Fellow (2005-2011) to Researcher (2011-2015), and then to Associate Professor (2015-present) at the University of Salento. In October 2018, she obtained national qualification as a Full Professor of Ecology.
Her research interests span multiple dimensions of environmental science, with particular emphasis on mapping ecosystem services, adaptive management, greenways, multi-scale disturbance patterns, GIS applications, and environmental perception. She teaches courses on Environmental Impact Assessment, Strategic Environmental Assessment, Environmental Certifications, Green Economy, and related topics across various degree programs including Environmental Sciences, Archaeological Heritage, and Law.
Dr. Petrosillo has made significant contributions to the scientific community through editorial roles, currently serving as Associate Editor for Ecological Indicators and Editor-in-Chief for the Environmental Sustainability and Applications section of Sustainability. Previously, she was Associate Editor for the Journal of Environmental Management (2018-2023). She is also an active member of several scientific associations, including the International Society of Landscape Ecology where she served as Treasurer from 2015-2023.
