Maria Giulia Lionetto

Maria Giulia Lionetto is an Associate Professor of Physiology (BIO/09) at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies, University of Salento. She has been serving in this position since 2015, following her appointment as Researcher in Physiology from 2000-2015. Her research is conducted at the Ecotekne Center in Lecce, Italy.

Her primary research interests include Environmental Physiology, Animal Physiology, Physiology of epithelia, and Cellular Physiology. Dr. Lionetto's work focuses on ion transport mechanisms, cell volume regulation, cellular responses to environmental stressors, biomarker development, and antioxidant properties of plant compounds. Her research has significant applications in environmental monitoring and pollution assessment.

Dr. Lionetto has published extensively in high-impact journals, with recent work concentrating on carbonic anhydrase as a biomarker, oxidative potential of particulate matter, cellular responses to environmental pollutants, and antioxidant compounds. Her publications demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary approach connecting physiology, environmental science, and toxicology.

Among her honors, she is a member of the Italian Society of Physiology and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. She serves as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Physiology and Topic Editor for International Journal of Molecular Sciences. She has also guest-edited multiple special issues on carbonic anhydrase research and environmental biomarkers.

Dr. Lionetto earned her PhD in Fundamental Ecology in 1996 and her Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Lecce in 1992 with highest honors. She has received recognition including the 'Giovani promesse della cultura pugliese' cultural award named after Nico Monfredi in 1993.
