Dr. Irene Headen is an Assistant Professor of Black Health in the Department of Community Health and Prevention at Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health. Her research focuses on social and structural determinants of racial disparities in maternal health outcomes, particularly for Black women. She employs epidemiologic and mixed-methods approaches to investigate neighborhood factors and structural racism's impact across the reproductive life course.
Education: PhD and MS in Epidemiology from University of California, Berkeley (2015); BS in Brain and Cognitive Science from MIT (undergraduate).
Key research interests include community-engaged research, health disparities, urban health, and spatial analysis (GIS). Her work emphasizes translating findings into multilevel interventions to address systemic inequities in maternal health.
Publications span 2012-2019, with a focus on pregnancy outcomes, neighborhood deprivation, and racial/ethnic disparities in gestational weight gain. Prior to joining Drexel in 2019, she completed postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley's Maternal Health Program and Drexel's Urban Health Collaborative.
