Professor Ira M. DeLong was a foundational figure in establishing the Department of Mathematics at the University of Colorado Boulder, joining in 1888 and teaching both college-level and preparatory mathematics courses. He retired in 1925 and passed away in 1942, leaving a bequest of $25,000 to the department. This endowment, after accumulating interest, funds the prestigious DeLong Lecture Series and undergraduate prizes for mathematics achievement. Beyond academia, DeLong was a prominent Boulder citizen, serving as president of the Mercantile Bank and Trust Company, organizer of the Colorado Education Association, and president of the charter convention that implemented the city manager form of government in Boulder in 1917.
