Henry Seely White (1861–1943) was a prominent mathematician and Professor of Mathematics at Vassar College. He held academic roles including Assistant Professor at Wesleyan University (1882–1883), instructor at Centenary College (1883–1884), Registrar and tutor at Wesleyan (1884–1887), and Chair of Mathematics at Northwestern University (until 1905). At Vassar, he served as department chair and was known as 'Pop White' for his wit and mentorship. His research focused on geometry, algebraic planes, and relativity, with notable contributions like his textbook Plane Curves of the Third Order (1925).
- Education: Wesleyan University (B.A. 1882), University of Göttingen (graduate studies)
Research interests included geometric curves/surfaces, homeomorphic sets, and invariant theory. He advised students like Grace Murray Hopper, a pioneer in computer science. White was active in the American Mathematical Society, serving as its President (1906–1908) and editor of journals. Post-retirement, he managed an apple orchard before passing away in 1943.
