Reed M. Gardner

Reed M. Gardner, PhD, FACMI, was a pioneering figure in medical informatics. He served as a co-director of medical computing at LDS, Cottonwood, and Alta View Hospitals in Salt Lake City, Utah. His academic career was deeply rooted at the University of Utah, where he contributed to the development of the HELP clinical information system and advanced medical informatics education. He held editorial roles in journals such as JAMIA and International Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing, shaping the field through peer review and leadership.

Dr. Gardner earned a BSc in Electrical Engineering (1960) and a PhD in Biophysics and Bioengineering (1968) from the University of Utah. His research focused on hospital informatics, clinical decision support, critical care automation, and public health systems. He authored over 350 articles and was a key architect of medical informatics curricula, mentoring generations of professionals.

His awards include the Morris F. Collen Award (2005) and recognition as an AMIA Fellow. He served as AMIA President and board member, driving organizational strategy and standards. His legacy includes foundational work in clinical informatics, electronic health records, and healthcare safety technologies.

Dr. Gardner passed away in 2020, leaving a legacy celebrated through JAMIA's memorial collection of his impactful contributions to informatics.
