Ioannis Votsis is a Professor of Philosophy at Northeastern University London, serving as Research Head for the 'Reimagining Higher Education in the Age of AI' cluster. He holds a BA from UC Berkeley (1998) and a PhD from the London School of Economics (2004). His research focuses on philosophy of science, scientific realism, epistemology, metaphysics, and AI ethics. He has held visiting roles at Stanford, LSE, and the University of Pittsburgh, and leads projects on analogical reasoning, neuro-symbolic systems, and machine learning epistemology.
Prof. Votsis co-edited special issues on democracy, computationalism, and scientific underdetermination, and chairs Northeastern’s diploma program. He actively contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives, including the Turing Institute’s Data Science group and the LSE’s Philosophy of Science Advisory Board. His work explores the intersection of AI, scientific methodology, and human cognition, with recent TEDx talks addressing AI’s societal impact and philosophical debates.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on epistemology, philosophy of science, and critical reasoning. He has held academic roles across Europe, including as Assistant Director at the Düsseldorf Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science. His research is supported by grants from the German Research Foundation and the British Academy.
