Dr. Handlovsky's research centers on health equity through critical analysis of structural discrimination's impact on health practices, particularly for 2SLGBTQ+ populations. She investigates how social, political, and cultural environments shape health experiences while emphasizing resilience frameworks. Her work integrates mental health, substance use, and harm reduction through grounded theory and critical methodologies, with special attention to aging LGBTQ+ communities and historical trauma from HIV/AIDS.
Recent publications (2023-2025) reveal consistent focus on LGBTQ+ health disparities, nursing education discrimination, pandemic impacts on vulnerable populations, and allyship development in healthcare. Her methodological approach spans qualitative, mixed-methods, and scoping reviews with strong community engagement.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- CIHR doctoral award
- UBC four Year Fellowship
- CIHR IMPART fellowship
As an active supervisor accepting PhD students, she mentors emerging researchers in equity-focused health studies. Her grant funding demonstrates sustained CIHR support for intersectional health research, particularly through doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships. Current projects address transgender healthcare navigation, HIV/AIDS legacy impacts, and discrimination in nursing education.
Her collaborative work spans multiple Canadian institutions, with recent photovoice studies in Quebec and multi-city analyses of gender-based violence services. She maintains strong community partnerships with LGBTQ+ organizations and harm reduction initiatives to ensure research directly addresses population needs.
