Ingeborg Birnie is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Strathclyde. She specializes in minority languages in education, focusing on revitalization efforts and bilingualism. Her work includes leading the ECML's PALINGUI project to document language learning pathways in young children and co-chairing the Scottish Council of Deans of Education Languages Group. She chairs Working Group 4 of the COST+ Action LITHME, exploring technology's role in sustaining minority languages. Awards include the AURORA Woman in Leadership (2023) and HASS Impact Award (2023).
Dr. Birnie teaches modules on language education and early childhood practices, supervising numerous doctoral students. Her research has led to initiatives like An Taigh Ceilidh, a Gaelic social space, and collaborations on the Erasmus+ Diversity in Science project. Key projects include the £25,000 Bòrd na Gàidhlig grant on Gaelic use in public spaces and the Rannsachadh Àrainn Eucoir project on bilingualism in healthcare. She has secured over €108,000 in grants, including an Erasmus+ project on virtual exchange in language teacher education.
