Professor Rob Dunbar holds the Chair of Celtic Languages, Literature, History and Antiquities at the University of Edinburgh within the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. A Canadian native with over two decades of experience in Gaelic language development, he has worked with international organizations like the Council of Europe and OSCE, as well as governmental bodies including the National Assembly for Wales and Bòrd na Gàidhlig. His career includes academic roles at the University of the Highlands and Islands, University of Glasgow, and University of Aberdeen.

Research Focus:
Professor Dunbar specializes in language policy and planning for Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Irish, and other minority languages, with emphasis on legal frameworks for preservation. His work also explores Gaelic literature, culture, and society (18th-20th centuries), Gaelic diaspora in Canada, and contemporary challenges in Gaelic media and education. Current projects include studies on Gaelic autobiographical writing, humor, and a scholarly edition of 19th-century Tiree/Nova Scotian poet John Maclean's secular song-poems.
