Dr. Ilya Pozdnyakov is a Lecturer in Biochemistry and Cell Biology at the School of Science, Constructor University. He holds a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the Institute of Cytology RAS (2016) and advanced degrees from St. Petersburg State University. His research focuses on ion transport mechanisms in microbes, evolutionary cell biology, and the interplay between ion channels and ecological niches. Prior roles include Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology and Guest Scientist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Cell Biology (2016), Institute of Cytology RAS
- M.Sc. in Biology (2011), St. Petersburg State University
- B.Sc. in Biology (2009), St. Petersburg State University
Research Interests: Integrating cell physiology, microbiology, and ecology to study ion channel evolution, electrical excitability origins, and microbial niche adaptation. Recent work highlights dinoflagellate channelomes and voltage-gated channels in eukaryotes.
Publications: Focused on channel diversity and function in eukaryotes, combining transcriptomics and evolutionary approaches. Key topics include dinoflagellate physiology, potassium channel diversity, and ancestral channel determinants.
Affiliations: Previously affiliated with the Laboratory of Cytology of Unicellular Organisms (2017–2022) and St. Petersburg Academic University (2017–2022). Collaborations with groups like “Marine Microbes” and Prof. A.Z. Worden’s team at GEOMAR.
