Dr. Ilonka C. Engelhardt is an Academic Assistant at the University of Tuebingen's Geo-Biosphere Interactions (GBI) group within the Faculty of Science, Geosciences Department. Her research focuses on plant-microbial interactions and their impact on biogeochemical cycles, particularly mechanisms of early root colonization by beneficial bacteria and bacterial migration through soil. She holds a PhD in Agroecology from the James Hutton Institute (2014-2018) and has conducted postdoctoral research at Neiker Tecnalia (2020-2022) and the James Hutton Institute (2018-2020).
Her academic journey includes a Master's in Environmental Microbiology (James Hutton Institute, 2012-2013) and a Bachelor's in Biomedical Technology (Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005-2008). She has contributed to projects such as the SENSIOIL initiative and the TERRA initiative exploring Kenyan grassland biodiversity.
Her work bridges soil microbiology, plant ecology, and environmental science, with a focus on understanding how environmental factors like precipitation and nitrogen availability shape microbial dynamics and plant-microbe interactions. Recent publications highlight innovative microscopy techniques and isotope tracing to study microbial behavior in soil systems.
Engelhardt collaborates across institutions, including INRA Dijon, Neiker Tecnalia, and the University of Burgundy, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to agroecology and soil science.
