Ida Al Fakir is an Associate Professor and Docent in History at the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH), affiliated with the Department of Movement, Culture and Society, Section of Educational Sciences. She chairs the Education and Research Committee and serves as a co-supervisor in the SMOVE graduate school. Her research focuses on 20th-century Swedish welfare and public health history, minority studies, and science and technology studies (STS). She leads a Swedish Research Council-funded project on ethnicity in epidemiological knowledge production (2022–2025). She collaborates with organizations like the Living History Forum and contributes to interdisciplinary research on movement and society through the Research in Education & Movement Culture group.
Education: PhD in History.
Research interests include historical analyses of minority treatment (e.g., Roma populations), socio-medical studies, and the intersection of ethnicity with epidemiological practices. Key projects include studies on the Church of Sweden’s engagement with minorities and the Zigenarundersökning (Gypsy Survey) of the 1960s.
Publications reflect her focus on historical social policies, church roles in minority management, and the evolution of children’s sports in Sweden. Grants include Swedish Research Council support for her current project on ethnicity and epidemiology.
Advising includes supervision of a PhD student in SMOVE and thesis guidance in teacher education programs.
