Ian Sherriff is the Academic Partnership Lead for Dementia at the Peninsula Medical School, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Plymouth. He is a leading figure in dementia research, policy, and education, with significant national and international influence.
His research interests center on dementia care, particularly in rural communities, dementia-friendly environments, air travel for people with dementia, veterans' dementia support, and health systems improvement. His methodological expertise includes realist evaluation, mixed methods, and policy impact research.
The recent research articles highlight a strong focus on evaluating person-centred dementia care interventions (D-PACT), stakeholder engagement in theory building, ethical inclusion in dementia research, biomarker research in Alzheimer's disease, and learning communities for dementia care improvement. These works span clinical, ethical, policy, and community-based domains, reflecting a highly interdisciplinary and impactful research program.

Ian Sherriff has supervised PhD students, notably on dementia and air travel. He has secured major research grants, including for the D-PACT programme and CombiDiag project. He is a keynote speaker at international conferences and has led the development of dementia-friendly initiatives globally, including in Italy and Ukraine. He has established international collaborations and memoranda with institutions in Macau, Japan, and the Netherlands. He is deeply involved in national policy through roles in the Prime Minister's Dementia Champion group, rural dementia task forces, and air transport initiatives. He chairs multiple national and global dementia groups and is a trustee for several veteran support organizations.
He is actively involved in teaching and training for a wide range of healthcare professionals, including nurses, medics, paramedics, dentists, midwives, and social care staff, both in the UK and internationally (e.g., China). He has also trained airport, city, and farming network staff in dementia awareness.
