Associate Professor Ian Maxwell is the Chair of Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Sydney's School of Literature, Art and Media. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and trained as a director at the Victorian College of the Arts. His research focuses on performance practices in extreme contexts and the intersection of performance with human experience, including projects on WWII refugee theatre and avant-garde performance history. He has held leadership roles such as Pro Dean of Arts and Acting Head of School, and chairs the Sydney Environment Institute and Charles Perkins Centre committees.
Research interests include German/Austrian refugee performance in Australia during WWII, avant-garde theatre from the 1960s, and the Actors Wellbeing project. He has directed works like Sergeant Snow White and published extensively, including Phat Beats, Dope Rhymes: Hip Hop Down Under Comin' Upper. Awards include the 2008 Marlis Thiersch Prize.
Teaches courses on directing, ritual performance, and critical theory. Supervised over 20 PhD and MA students, including studies on global music theatre, Indigenous performance, and actor training. Current projects explore Jerzy Grotowski's impact on Australian theatre and the Dunera Boys' wartime theatre.
