Paul Allain is Professor of Theatre and Performance at the University of Kent's Faculty of Humanities, a position he has held since 2003. He concurrently serves as Associate Dean (Research and Innovation) for the Faculty since 2015 and as a Research Mentor for the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama.
His research centers on Polish and East European Theatre with deep expertise in Jerzy Grotowski's methodologies and the Gardzienice Theatre Association. He is a leading authority on Suzuki training systems, Eastern theatre aesthetics, and performer training theories. His work bridges intercultural performance practices with contemporary theatre innovation through practice-as-research frameworks.
Key honors include the Services to Polish Culture Medal and Award (2009) and a shortlisting for THE Excellence and Innovation in the Arts (2010).
Professor Allain directs significant Leverhulme Trust-funded initiatives including hosting Richard Schechner as a Visiting Professor and developing the online A-Z of Physical Actor Training. His scholarly output features seminal publications such as Gardzienice: Polish Theatre in Transition (1997) and The Art of Stillness: The Theatre Practice of Tadashi Suzuki (2002/2009), alongside co-editing the Cambridge Companion to Chekhov (2000) and Routledge Companion to Theatre and Performance (2006/2014).
