معرفی
Professor Ian Jones is a faculty member in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton, specializing in gravitational wave astronomy. He is affiliated with the Southampton Theory Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, contributing to foundational research in Einstein’s General Relativity and neutron star physics. His teaching responsibilities include leading the MATH6172 Gravitational Waves module for fourth-year students.
Education: Ian holds an MA in Physics and Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Cardiff, advised by Prof. Bernard Schutz. He has postdoctoral experience at the University of Southampton’s School of Mathematics and Pennsylvania State University’s Center for Gravitational Wave Physics.
Research Interests: Ian’s work focuses on gravitational wave emission from spinning neutron stars, aiming to detect such signals and understand their internal physics. He explores topics like dynamical tides, magnetar behavior, and pitfalls in gravitomagnetic models while collaborating on projects supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). His research bridges theoretical physics with observational astronomy, emphasizing multimessenger observations and dense matter equations of state.
Advising & Grants: Currently supervising two PhD students in Mathematical Sciences—Yashaswi Gangwar and Andrew Rhys Counsell. His research projects include STFC-funded initiatives such as the 'Dynamical neutron star tides' and 'Gravitational wave astronomy', leveraging interdisciplinary collaborations to advance the field. No explicit mention of awards is found in his profile.
Labs/Teams: Active in the STAG Research Centre and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, contributing to cutting-edge gravitational wave studies.
