Professor Ian Goldin is the Oxford University Professor of Globalisation and Development, Senior Fellow at the Oxford Martin School, and a Professorial Fellow at Balliol College. His roles include overseeing interdisciplinary research programs on the Future of Work, Technological and Economic Change, and Future of Development. Previously, he served as Director of the Oxford Martin School (2006–2016), Vice President of the World Bank (2003–2006), and Chief Executive of the Development Bank of Southern Africa (1996–2001). He has authored over 50 articles and 25 books, including The Shortest History of Migration and Age of the City. His research focuses on globalization, migration, urbanization, and systemic risks. Goldin has been knighted by France and recognized as a Global Leader of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum.
Education: BA (Hons) and BSc (University of Cape Town), MSc (London School of Economics), MA and Doctorate (University of Oxford).
Research Interests: Goldin’s work examines migration’s historical and contemporary impacts, urbanization challenges, technological change, and the governance of global risks. He advocates for long-term policy approaches to address inequality and systemic vulnerabilities. His recent publications analyze productivity slowdowns, post-pandemic recovery, and the ethical implications of AI and globalization.
Awards & Recognition: French Government’s Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, World Economic Forum’s Global Leader of Tomorrow. His BBC series include After the Crash and The Pandemic That Changed the World.
Key Contributions: Goldin co-founded the Oxford Martin Commission for Future Generations, addressing short-termism in governance. His research bridges academia and policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary solutions to global challenges.
