Dr. Ian Cawood is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Stirling. He previously served as Head of History at Newman University (2002-2019), establishing their Single Honours History program and a Victorian Studies MSc. His research focuses on Victorian politics, corruption in governance, and the public service ethos. Notably, his monograph The Liberal Unionist Party, 1886-1912 (2012) was shortlisted for the Total Politics Political History Book of the Year. He leads an AHRC-funded project on corruption and public service in Western Europe and is editing a three-volume history of the radical press (1815-1914). He is also researching the revival of the Church of Scotland post-1843 Great Disruption, using the Drummond Tract Collection.
Education: PhD (University of Leicester), MPhil (University of Birmingham), undergraduate studies at Girton College, Cambridge. Affiliations include the Royal Historical Society (Fellow) and the Higher Education Academy (Senior Fellow). He contributes regularly to the Times Literary Supplement and has appeared on BBC programs like Who Do You Think You Are? and Newsnight.
Current projects include a monograph on 19th-century British public service ethos and co-editing The Many Lives of Corruption (2022). He holds an Honorary Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Birmingham and collaborates with the Centre for Print History and Culture.
