Professor Ian Armit serves as Chair in Archaeology at the University of York's Department of Archaeology. His career includes roles at the University of Edinburgh, Queen’s University Belfast, University of Bradford, and University of Leicester. He holds fellowships from the Higher Education Academy, Society of Antiquaries, and Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
Armit specializes in the cultural archaeology of Later Bronze and Iron Age Europe, emphasizing conflict dynamics, prehistoric demography, and Scottish archaeology. His ERC-funded COMMIOS Project investigates Iron Age Britain's population through aDNA, isotopes, and osteological analyses. Notable projects include the Covesea Caves (ritual use of sea caves) and Wetwang/Garton Slack (Iron Age cemetery).
He has supervised numerous PhD students now in academic and museum roles. Awards include the Current Archaeology Research Project of the Year Award (2019) and Saltire Award (2021). He reviews grant applications for AHRC, Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions, and others, and holds editorial roles in journals like Journal of the North Atlantic and E-Keltoi.
Research interests span Iron Age social structures, ritual practices, and interdisciplinary methods combining genetics with archaeology. Recent work focuses on population movements during the Beaker period and kinship analysis in burial sites.
