Dr. Iain Stewart is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at University College London (UCL). He specializes in the intellectual history of liberalism and its critics in twentieth-century Europe, with particular focus on France and Cold War dynamics. Stewart joined UCL in 2015 after teaching at Queen Mary University of London and Sciences Po Paris.
He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester (2011). His research explores Cold War liberalism, French intellectual exiles during WWII, and the legacy of philosophers like Raymond Aron and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Major works include Raymond Aron and Liberal Thought in the Twentieth Century (2020) and edited collections on French liberal thought since 1950.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on the cultural Cold War, French occupation history, and new histories of liberalism. He serves as Teaching Fellows Lead Mentor in his department. His current research projects investigate Cold War liberalism's evolution and French intellectual networks in London during WWII.
