Professor Iain Lake is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA), UK. He is affiliated with the School of Environmental Sciences and multiple research centers including the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and ClimateUEA. His career spans roles from undergraduate studies at UEA (1991-1994), a PhD in Environmental Sciences (1994-1998), and academic positions since 2005. He leads research on environmental health impacts, focusing on infectious diseases, climate change, and food safety.
His research integrates GIS to link environmental data with health outcomes, particularly gastrointestinal infections (e.g., Campylobacter and Cryptosporidium), climate change effects on allergies and foodborne illnesses, and contaminants in food systems. He has secured funding from agencies like the National Institute for Health and Care Research and led projects such as the Campylobacter project (ENIGMA) and FP7-funded ATOPICA. He currently co-leads the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Gastrointestinal Infections and chairs EnvEast Doctoral Training Partnership.
Lake’s work addresses global health challenges, including the health impacts of climate change on diseases like dengue fever and pollen allergies. He has over 140 peer-reviewed publications, cited over 2,900 times (Google Scholar), and contributes to policy reports for UK government agencies. He actively mentors PhD students and oversees projects on extreme weather resilience and food safety monitoring.
