Professor Håvard Haarstad is a leading academic in human geography and director of the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation (CET) at the University of Bergen. His research focuses on urban sustainability, climate governance, and equity in energy transitions. He holds a professorship in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Science. Haarstad supervises master’s and PhD students on topics like climate policy, urban logistics, and just transitions. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing actionable knowledge for societal impact.
He directs CET, a hub for over 30 researchers and students working on climate solutions. Recent projects include ECOBUDGETS (Norwegian Research Council), DEMOCLIM (citizen activism), and CITYFREIGHT (urban logistics). Haarstad has authored/co-authored over 100 publications, including the textbook *Å studere bærekraftig byutvikling* (2025) and co-edited *Haste: the slow politics of climate urgency* (2023).
His research highlights tensions between rapid climate action and democratic processes, notably in compact city planning and hydrogen economy debates. He chairs the Empowered Futures research school and serves on Norway’s Board of Technology and the Nordic Journal of Urban Studies editorial board.
Haarstad’s teaching emphasizes urban sustainability, with upcoming courses on GEO222: Sustainability in an Urbanising World. He has supervised 30+ master’s students and 8 PhDs, focusing on climate policy, energy communities, and urban equity.
