Jakob Grandin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Bergen (UiB), where he is affiliated with SpaceLab and the Center for Climate and Energy Transformation. He serves as the coordinator of the UiB Collaboratory, a student-faculty initiative fostering collaborative and innovative learning methods for addressing complex social and environmental challenges. He also teaches at Uppsala University, contributing to interdisciplinary programs in sustainable development.
His research centers on urban climate transformation, particularly how cities govern rapid and deep sustainability transitions. Drawing from human geography and critical social sciences, he investigates the relational politics of policy mobilities, the temporality of climate action, and the governance of urban futures. His work emphasizes theoretical insights from relational geography and policy mobilities literature to understand how transformation pathways are assembled across scales.
His recent publications reflect a strong focus on climate governance, urban sustainability, fossil fuel displacement, and the politics of urgency. Themes include the limits of soft governance in climate action plans, the stickiness of urban interventions, and the role of cities like Oslo and Addis Ababa in leading transport and energy transitions. His scholarly output spans high-impact journals in geography, urban studies, and sustainability science.

Grandin is deeply committed to transforming higher education through participatory and student-led pedagogies. He has taught courses such as GEO328 (Planning and Society), GEO206 (Qualitative Analysis), and contributed to several others at UiB. His educational philosophy emphasizes pluralism, participation, and the co-creation of knowledge. He has shared his insights through public chronicles, anthologies, and educational development projects, advocating for systemic change in academic institutions.
He is actively involved in research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway and the Trond Mohn Foundation, particularly those addressing accountable solar energy transitions and urban climate governance. His collaborative work with researchers like Håvard Haarstad and Siddharth Sareen underscores his interdisciplinary and team-based approach to sustainability challenges.
