Hywel Clifford serves as a Tutor in Old Testament at Ripon College Cuddesdon, affiliated with the University of Oxford's Faculty of Theology and Religion. His academic career includes a BMus from the University of Edinburgh (1997), ARCM from the Royal College of Music (1997), BD in Biblical Studies from Edinburgh (2000), MSt from Christ Church, Oxford (2001), and a DPhil in Old Testament theology (2005).
Research interests span monotheism, Isaiah 40-55, early Greek philosophy, Philo of Alexandria, biblical archaeology, and the application of biblical texts to contemporary ethical questions. He actively engages with the history of biblical interpretation, including Reformation and modern perspectives.
A member of scholarly societies such as the Society for Old Testament Study (SOTS) and Society of Biblical Literature (SBL), Hywel has published on Second Temple Jewish topics and co-edited Companion to the Old Testament: Introduction, Interpretation, Application (2016). His teaching integrates field trips to the British Museum and interfaith dialogues.
