Hyuk-chan Kwon

Hyuk-chan Kwon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Arts. He previously held academic positions at City University of Hong Kong, the Academy of Korean Studies, and Korea University. His research focuses on premodern Korean and Chinese literature, with particular emphasis on sexuality and identity conflicts in p’ansori narratives, comparative studies of Korean and Chinese literary traditions, and the transformation of traditional narratives in contemporary media.

Dr. Kwon’s work bridges premodern and modern literary cultures, analyzing how classical Chinese literary masterpieces influence East Asian cultural production. He has published in journals such as Acta Koreana and Journal of Chinese Language and Literature, and contributed to edited volumes like Self, Identity, and Emotions in Traditional China. His current project revises his dissertation into a book on the cultural appropriation of Three Kingdoms narratives in Korea.

He teaches courses on Korean popular culture, advanced Korean language, and interdisciplinary topics including Love, Death, and Cannibalism in Korean Culture. His expertise spans translation studies, cultural heritage management, and the analysis of digital games as historical simulations.
