Dr. Huijuan Zhao is a Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University's College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS). She holds the Stanzione Professorship and leads the Computational Mechanics and Materials Lab (CMML). Her academic journey includes progression from Assistant Professor (2012-2018) to Associate Professor (2018-2024) and finally to full Professor in 2024.
Dr. Zhao's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Science & Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2010)
- M.S. in Solid Mechanics from Tsinghua University (2002)
- B.S. in Engineering Mechanics from Tsinghua University (2000)
Dr. Zhao's research focuses on computational materials science and mechanics, with particular emphasis on multi-scale/multi-physics modeling of nanostructured materials. Her work bridges fundamental understanding of material behavior at the nanoscale with practical engineering applications. She investigates computational nano-mechanics, material design and characterization, surface/interface properties in composites, and material theory development. Her research has significant applications in energy systems, sensor technology, and advanced materials development.
Analysis of Dr. Zhao's recent publications reveals a strong trend toward applied computational mechanics, particularly in developing novel sensor technologies for industrial applications and investigating the properties of 2D materials. Dr. Zhao leads the Computational Mechanics and Materials Lab (CMML), which focuses on cutting-edge research in computational materials science. The lab has published extensively on topics ranging from nanostructured alloys for fusion energy systems to 2D materials and sensor technology. Under her leadership, the lab has developed strong collaborations with national laboratories including Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, where she previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher.
