Dr. Xin Zhao is an Associate Professor at the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences of Clemson University. He joined the university in 2015 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to his current role. His research focuses on laser-matter interaction and ultrafast laser applications in manufacturing processes.
- Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering, Purdue University (2014)
- M.S., Physics, Tsinghua University (2008)
- B.S., Physics, Tsinghua University (2006)
Dr. Zhao leads the Laser-Based Manufacturing and Materials Processing Laboratory (LAM2), where his team investigates laser-induced plasma, micro/nanomachining, and dissimilar materials joining. His work combines experimental studies and physics-based modeling to explore phenomena like Coulomb explosion, thermal accumulation, and periodic nanostructure formation under extreme conditions.
His recent publications highlight advances in femtosecond laser micromachining, ultrafast laser ablation, and friction element welding. Key trends include precision manufacturing, surface structuring, and laser shock peening for fatigue life enhancement in metallic components.
- 2018 Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from SME
Dr. Zhao serves on the ASME/MED Manufacturing Processes Technical Committee and is a member of ASME, SME, and LIA. He reviews for over 20 journals in his field and explores applications of ultrafast lasers in additive manufacturing and sensor fabrication.
