Lihong Zhao is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering. She holds a BS from Tsinghua University, and MS/PhD in Materials Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Her research focuses on advanced energy storage systems, particularly solid-state batteries, electrode-electrolyte interfaces, and autonomous materials systems. Recent work addresses mechanical stability in metal-solid electrolyte interfaces, operando characterization techniques, and next-generation battery architectures.
Zhao's publications emphasize fundamental mechanisms in battery degradation, novel electrolyte design, and strategies for high-energy-density systems. Her group employs multidisciplinary approaches spanning electrochemistry, materials characterization, and mechanical analysis.
She is developing innovative manufacturing processes for solid-state batteries and collaborates with national labs on materials innovation. Current projects include lithium-organic batteries targeting 500 Wh/kg energy density and zinc-iodine flow battery designs.
