Yue Qi is the Joan Wernig Sorensen Professor of Engineering and Deputy Director of the Initiative for Sustainable Energy (ISE) at Brown University's School of Engineering. She holds a B.S. in Materials Science and Computer Science from Tsinghua University and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Caltech. Prior to academia, she spent 12 years at General Motors R&D Center advancing multi-scale modeling for energy materials. Her research focuses on computational materials science, multi-scale modeling of defects and interfaces, and electrochemical-mechanical coupling in battery and fuel cell materials. Her lab develops atom-by-atom simulation methods for clean energy materials.
Her career includes leadership roles such as the inaugural Associate Dean for Inclusion and Diversity in MSU’s College of Engineering (2018–2020). Key research areas include solid-state batteries, battery interphases, and perovskite oxides for solar thermochemical hydrogen production. She investigates material properties at interfaces, such as SEI formation, lithium anode passivation, and EDL structures in electrolytes.
Her work spans computational design of solid electrolytes, electrode-electrolyte interfacial chemistry, and advanced characterization techniques like operando SEM. She emphasizes sustainable energy storage solutions, with applications in batteries, fuel cells, and energy-efficient materials.
