Dr. Hugo J Bellen is a Distinguished Service Professor at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in the Departments of Molecular and Human Genetics and Neuroscience. A member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he is renowned for his work in Drosophila genetics and neurodevelopmental/neurodegenerative disease research.
- Education: MBA (Solvay Brussels School), DVM (Ghent University), PhD (UC Davis), Postdoc (University of Basel)
His research spans neurogenetics, mitochondrial biology, and lipid droplet mechanisms in diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Friedreich's ataxia. He developed groundbreaking tools (MiMIC, CRIMIC) for gene manipulation and co-leads the Model Organism Screening Center for the Undiagnosed Diseases Network, identifying 35+ human disease genes.
Recent publications focus on X-linked disorders, Alzheimer's protective alleles, and CRISPR/Cas9 applications. Awards include the Gruber Prize, George Beadle Award, and multiple mentoring honors. Lab resources are shared globally through the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center.
- Scientific Affiliations: EMBO, National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- Leadership Roles: Chair of March of Dimes Chair in Developmental Biology, Neurological Research Institute faculty
He has trained 41 graduate students and 53 postdoctoral fellows, influencing global genetic research. Current work includes AI-MARRVEL for Mendelian disorder diagnostics and exploring ROS/glial lipid interactions in neurodegeneration.
