Hugh Whittaker is Professor in the Economy and Business of Japan at the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies and Fellow of St Antony’s College, University of Oxford. He previously held academic positions at Cambridge University, Doshisha University, and Auckland University. He holds a Ph.D. in Economic Sociology from Imperial College London.
Research Focus: Whittaker's work examines institutional change in Japan's economy, with emphasis on:
- Entrepreneurship and innovation management
- Corporate governance transformations
- Employment relations evolution
- Digital/green economy transitions
- State-business dynamics in East Asia
Publication Trends: His scholarly books (2005-2020) demonstrate consistent focus on Japan's economic adaptation, examining how institutional coherence impacts technological innovation, corporate restructuring, and labor systems during periods of economic transition.
Affiliations: Serves as researcher at Nissan Institute and Senior Member of St Antony’s College. Was FFJ/Banque de France Fellow (2022) conducting fieldwork on sustainable capitalism and digital transformation in Japan.
