Huda Hassan is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University's Steinhardt School. Her work bridges academic scholarship with journalistic and artistic practice, focusing on diasporic cultural expressions, Black Muslim experiences, and media representations. She holds a Ph.D. in Women and Gender Studies from the University of Toronto (2023), where she was a New College Doctoral Fellow.
Her research includes an archival study of African Muslims in 19th- and 20th-century New York and examinations of Harlem Renaissance diasporic sensibilities. Current affiliations include the Schomburg Center Scholars-in-Residence Program (2025-2026) and roles as an arts columnist for CBC, with bylines in New York Magazine, Globe and Mail, Pitchfork, and others. She produces stories for radio, TV, and film and appears on programs like CBC’s Commotion and CTV’s Culture Shock.
Key research themes include black transnational feminisms, media criminalization of marginalized groups, and counter-narratives through artistic place-making. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates cultural studies, media analysis, and archival scholarship.
