Tyesha Maddox is an Associate Professor in the Department of African and African American Studies at Fordham University. She holds a Ph.D. in History from New York University (2016) and degrees from Cornell University. Her research focuses on Caribbean migration, transnational identity formation, and mutual aid societies in the U.S. Her monograph A Home Away from Home (2024) examines how Caribbean immigrant organizations shaped Black diasporic politics. Maddox has held fellowships at the Schomburg Center, Rutgers University, and the American Antiquarian Society.
Her teaching includes courses on Black protest history, migration, and Caribbean cultures. She co-created the This is Not a Riot! resource guide contextualizing Black Lives Matter. Maddox’s work bridges academia and public history, with contributions to Bloomberg CityLab and appearances on NBC News and CBS News.
Key awards include the Fordham Faculty Research Grant (2021–2022) and the Andrés Ramos Mattei-Neville Hall Article Prize Honorable Mention (2020). She actively participates in initiatives like Mutual Aid NYC’s Organizing Archive and the Generosity Commission.
