Huanbin Xu, PhD is a tenured Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine, located at the Tulane National Primate Research Center in Covington, Louisiana. His research focuses on immunological mechanisms in viral infections, particularly HIV/SIV and tuberculosis, with emphasis on immune development, viral reservoirs, and immunometabolic pathways.
Education: MS in Immunology from Chinese Academy of Sciences (China), PhD in Immunology from Fudan University (Shanghai, China).
Research Interests:
- Neonatal immune system development and aging-related immune decline (immunosenescence)
- Epigenetic regulation of germinal center B cell responses post-vaccination
- Pediatric HIV prevention strategies and viral reservoir quantification
- Trained innate immunity and immunometabolic changes in tuberculosis
- Mucosal immunology of HIV infection and coinfections.
His work combines non-human primate models with clinical studies to address translational questions in infectious diseases.
Key Contributions:
- Identified impaired germinal center follicular T helper cell development in neonatal SIV infection
- Demonstrated correlation between circulating proviral DNA and viral rebound post-ART interruption
- Advanced understanding of tryptophan metabolism dysregulation in HIV/TB coinfection
- Pioneered studies on IL-17-producing innate lymphoid cells in mucosal immunity
Honors:
- Carol Lavin Bernick Foundation Award (2020)
- Tulane School of Medicine's Outstanding Research Achievement (2015 & 2023)
Professional Activities:
- NIH Study Section Reviewer
- Editorial Board Member: Scientific Reports & Frontiers
- Ad hoc reviewer for multiple immunology journals
Laboratory Affiliation:
Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC), a major facility for non-human primate research in infectious diseases and vaccine development.
