Dr. Ronald Veazey is a Tenured Professor of Pathology and Chair of the Division of Comparative Pathology at the Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC). He specializes in HIV/SIV pathogenesis, mucosal immunology, and vaccine development using non-human primate models. His research focuses on early viral transmission, immune responses, and reservoir persistence, with over 200 peer-reviewed publications.
Education: DVM from Oklahoma State University (1987), PhD in Veterinary Pathology from Louisiana State University (1992), and postdoctoral training at Harvard University (1992–1994).
Research interests include mucosal immunity, neonatal immunology, and the role of alcohol in accelerating HIV/AIDS progression. He leads studies on HIV prevention strategies, such as microbicides and vaccines, and collaborates with NIH committees like the Simian Vaccine Evaluation Units (SVEU).
Key contributions include identifying the gastrointestinal tract as a major HIV/SIV reservoir and demonstrating alcohol’s role in exacerbating viral replication. He serves on editorial boards for journals such as AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses and Pathogens and Immunity.
Labs/Teams: Directs a lab at the TNPRC focused on HIV/AIDS pathogenesis and prevention, collaborating with institutions like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the NIH AIDS Vaccine Study Section.
