Amitinder Kaur, MD is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Chair of the Division of Immunology at Tulane University. She leads research on immune responses to infectious diseases, particularly focusing on nonhuman primate (NHP) models to study HIV/AIDS and cytomegalovirus (CMV) pathogenesis. Her work includes investigating innate and adaptive immunity mechanisms, including the role of natural killer T (NKT) cells in HIV/SIV infections and vaccine development.
Education: MBBS (Christian Medical College, India), MD (Christian Medical College), MSc in Infectious Diseases (Royal Postgraduate Medical School, UK).
Research interests span AIDS immunopathogenesis, CMV vaccine development, and placental transmission models. She directs the Flow Cytometry Core supporting over 50 scientists and leads an NIH-funded Cellular Immunology Laboratory for AIDS vaccine research.
Her lab pioneered studies on NKT cell dynamics in SIV/macaque models and developed a rhesus macaque model for congenital CMV transmission. Key contributions include understanding immune correlates of vaccine protection and viral immune evasion strategies.
Grants/Projects: NIH contract for Nonhuman Primate Core Cellular Immunology Laboratory (2017-present). Active in collaborative research on vaccine efficacy, immune activation, and viral persistence mechanisms.
