Howard Neil Hodis

Howard Neil Hodis, MD, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC), holding the Harry J. Bauer and Dorothy Bauer Rawlins Professorship in Cardiology. He leads the USC Atherosclerosis Research Unit (ARU) and directs the ARU Core Imaging and Reading Center (CIRC), specializing in translational research on vascular disease, atherobiology, and imaging technologies. His work integrates basic science, clinical studies, and population research, with a focus on hormone therapy timing, women's health, and HIV-associated cardiovascular risks.

Dr. Hodis has over 26 years of NIH funding, leading 20 NIH projects, including 8 randomized controlled trials. He has mentored 56 students and co-mentored on NIH K-awards. His research emphasizes prevention and intervention strategies for atherosclerosis, with landmark studies like the ELITE trial confirming the hormone therapy timing hypothesis. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications and delivered 300+ invited lectures globally.

His awards include the North American Menopause Society’s Thomas Clarkson Award (2010), Association of American Physicians membership (2008), and NASA Technology Awards (2008). He serves on NIH review panels and Data Safety Monitoring Boards, contributing to cardiovascular and HIV-related research.

Dr. Hodis’ labs, ARU and CIRC, develop non-invasive imaging tools and coordinate large-scale clinical trials. His work bridges clinical practice and research, addressing aging processes and comorbidities in cardiovascular and HIV populations.
