Holly Smith is a Research Fellow at St John’s College, University of Cambridge, specializing in urban history with a focus on 20th- and 21st-century architecture and politics. She holds a BA and MPhil from Cambridge and a PhD from University College London (2020–2023), funded by a Wolfson Scholarship. Her research examines how built environments shape political discourse, particularly in housing and welfare state debates.
Her first book, Up in the Air: A History of High-Rise Britain (Verso, 2025), explores high-rise housing’s social and political dimensions. She has won the Duncan Tanner Prize 2022 for work on the Ronan Point disaster and the Hawksmoor Medal for reinterpreting Park Hill Estate’s design history.
Smith’s policy work includes roles at the Institute for Community Studies (2022–2023) and collaborations with the Local Government Association and National Fire Chiefs Council. She teaches architectural and urban history, supervising dissertations in these fields.
