Prof. Dr. Holger Helbig holds the Uwe Johnson Professorship for Modern German Literature of the 20th Century at the Institute of German Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Rostock. He directs the Uwe Johnson Archive, Uwe Johnson Research Center, and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences' "Uwe Johnson Edition" project, establishing Rostock as the global hub for Johnson scholarship.
Education:
- Studies in Jena and Erlangen
- PhD on Uwe Johnson (1995)
- Habilitation on Goethe's Theory of Colors (2003)
- Visiting Scholar, Columbia University (1996)
- Visiting Scholar, Harvard University (2008)
His research centers on Modern German Literature since 1945 with specialized expertise in Uwe Johnson's works, intersecting with history of science and cultural studies through investigations of "project makers" and science-public sphere dynamics. He pioneers low-technology teaching methodologies while leading critical edition projects including Johnson's Complete Works and Ernst Barlach's letters. His scholarship bridges textual analysis with exhibition curation, notably for Rostock's 800th/University's 600th anniversary.
Scientific Awards:
- Heisenberg Fellowship of the German Research Foundation (2005-2009)
Prof. Helbig secures major academy funding for the "Uwe Johnson Edition" project while directing four interdisciplinary working groups: Werkausgabe (Complete Works), Digitale Edition (Digital Editing), Johnson in der Schule (School Integration), and Wissenschaft ausstellen (Exhibition Science). These teams engage students in archival work and exhibition design, producing significant outputs like the "Von Zuse zu Zuse" computer history exhibition (2011) and collaborative city-university anniversary displays (2018).
