Hillary Chute is Distinguished Professor of English and Art+Design at Northeastern University with joint appointments in two colleges. She holds a PhD from Rutgers University and is a leading scholar in comics and graphic narrative studies. Her work examines intersections of visual culture, contemporary literature, and documentary forms.
Research analyzes comics as literary and visual mediums, with special focus on autobiographical works, gender representation, and historical documentation. Current projects explore comics as tools for social commentary and cultural memory preservation.
Authored multiple award-winning books including 'Graphic Women', 'Disaster Drawn', and 'Why Comics?'. Serves as comics columnist for The New York Times Book Review and co-edits special journal issues on visual narrative.
