Research Interests: Chapman specializes in graphic narratives and critical biography with a focus on women's literary history and comics scholarship. Her creative-academic practice bridges visual storytelling and biographical research, exemplified by her award-winning graphic history "Why She Wrote" which reimagines the lives of classic women authors through comics. She investigates literary adaptations in contemporary media, particularly examining how zombie film adaptations like "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" revitalize engagement with 19th-century literature. Her work intersects comics studies, feminist literary criticism, and adaptation theory.
Publication Trends: Chapman's recent scholarship demonstrates interdisciplinary innovation, merging literary analysis with visual narrative techniques. Her 2022 essay analyzes cinematic adaptation strategies while her 2021 graphic history pioneers biographical comics as scholarly methodology, revealing patterns in how visual formats transform literary historiography.
Scientific Awards:
- Award for "Why She Wrote: A Graphic History of the Lives, Inspiration, and Influence behind the Pens of Classic Women Writers" (2021)
- Nomination for Comic Book Slumber Party anthology series
Professional Activities: Chapman co-organised the Bristol Comic and Zine Fair (2013-2018) and co-hosts the literary podcast "Bonnets at Dawn". Prior to academia, she worked at IOP Publishing. She actively mentors emerging comics creators through student projects and community initiatives while developing new graphic scholarship on women writers.
