Professor Hesam Olya serves as Head of the Marketing and Creative & Cultural Industries Subject Group at the University of Sheffield Management School, where he holds a Chair in Cultural and Creative Industries. Previously, he worked at Oxford Brookes Business School and Sejong University in South Korea before joining Sheffield in 2018. He served as Research Development Director of the Marketing and CCI group until 2021 and currently leads the Behavioural Research for Inclusivity, Sustainability and Technological Transformation (BRISTT) research group.
Professor Olya's research focuses on complex system management, cultural consumptions, and sustainable marketing with particular emphasis on climate change impacts. His work takes an interdisciplinary approach to investigate complex social problems, developing impactful and innovative conclusions. He has published extensively in top-tier journals across tourism, marketing, and sustainability domains, with recent work exploring generative AI applications in sustainable tourism development, space tourism psychology, and ethical consumption in hospitality contexts.
His recent publications reveal a clear trend toward interdisciplinary research connecting tourism management with sustainability challenges, digital transformation, and consumer psychology. Olya's work frequently employs advanced methodological approaches including multi-methods, asymmetric modeling, and configurational analysis to address complex tourism and marketing phenomena. His research spans diverse geographical contexts across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, reflecting a global perspective on tourism and consumer behavior.
Professor Olya actively supervises PhD students including Huaiyu Li, Pengen Mai, Xiangru Liu, and Shahab Hayeriesfehani, with previous students Alexis Thouki, Yiren Wu, and Mengran Xiong having completed their degrees. He has secured significant research grants including projects on influencer marketing for pro-social causes, destination development in OIC countries, halal cosmetic market penetration, and disabled tourists' behavioral intentions.
As an academic leader, he serves as associate editor for the International Journal of Consumer Studies and previously for the Service Industries Journal. He regularly delivers keynotes at prestigious international conferences across the USA, UK, Italy, South Korea, Cyprus, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Africa, demonstrating his global influence in the field of tourism and marketing research.
