Hervé Claustre is a Research Director (Full Research Professor) at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), France, affiliated with the Villefranche Oceanography Laboratory (LOV) at Sorbonne Université. He has held this position since 2001, following roles as CNRS Research Scientist (1990-2000) and Visiting Scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara (1995-1996).
- Degrees: Engineer in Agronomy (1983), Master of Oceanography (1984), PhD in Oceanography (1987), D.Sc. in Oceanography (1995) from University of Paris VI.
His research focuses on optical oceanography, ocean color remote sensing, and autonomous ocean observation platforms, particularly BGC-Argo floats. He explores marine biogeochemical cycles, phytoplankton community dynamics, and ocean literacy initiatives. Recent work emphasizes global carbon fluxes, particle size impacts on carbon export, and machine learning applications for marine data.
Scientific achievements include:
- André Giret Prize (2021)
- ERC Advanced Grants for remOcean (2010) and REFINE (2019)
- CNRS Silver Medal (2005)
- NATO Science Fellowship (1995)
He has supervised 38 graduate students (18 PhD, 20 MSc) and 11 postdoctoral fellows, including EU Marie Curie Fellows. His funding record exceeds 11 M€ as Principal Investigator. Claustre co-chairs the international BGC-Argo program, aiming to sustain a global array of biogeochemical profiling floats under anthropogenic pressure.
