Dr. Lynne Talley is a Professor of Physical Oceanography and Climate Sciences at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. She holds leadership roles in the Climate-Ocean-Atmosphere-Program (COAP) and the Climate, Atmospheric Science and Physical Oceanography research division (CASPO). Her research focuses on ocean circulation patterns, climate change impacts on oceans, and hydrographic dynamics. Key interests include Southern Ocean studies, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and the role of buoyancy forcing in climate systems.
Research Highlights:
- Leading initiatives like SOCCOM (Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations) and GO-BGC (Global Biogeochemistry Array) to monitor carbon cycles and ocean dynamics.
- Investigates deep water pathways in the South Australian Basin and Indo-Pacific sectors.
- Studies climate feedback mechanisms involving anthropogenic aerosols and greenhouse gases.
Funded Projects (Current):
- GO-BGC: NSF-funded global biogeochemistry array.
- SOCCOM: NSF-supported Southern Ocean carbon modeling.
- US GO-SHIP: Repeat hydrography studies (2021–2026).
- Pilot observations of equatorial turbulence (RAPID NSF grant).
Dr. Talley’s work emphasizes observational methodologies, including Argo float deployments and advanced data practices. Her findings bridge large-scale climate patterns with submesoscale ocean processes, contributing to global climate models and policy-informed science.
